Report: Clark Atlanta University ranks worst in student debt

TheGrio

The US News & World Report recently did an analysis of colleges and universities where students graduated with the least and the most amounts of debt debt. Clark Atlanta University ranks at the top of schools where students exit with most debt.

This finding is perhaps unsurprising, since 94 percent of students borrow money to attend the HBCU. The average debt of a 2011 Clark Atlanta graduate is a whopping $47,066. That could easily cripple someone with a well paying job, talk less of a recent college graduate

The report calculated the average debt of graduating students, the percent of students who borrowed and their U.S. News National Universities rank.

On a more positive note, Howard University was ranked sixth on the list of colleges or universities with students graduating with the least debt at an average of $15,080.

People Of Color Organize!

Western imperialism responded to the real threat of Black liberation praxis, which arose in the late 60’s and early 70’s, by employing a classic neo-colonial strategy of isolating Black social unrest from its roots as human insurrection against structural-inert violence and global oppression. These counter-revolutionary measures proved extremely successful in crushing any potentialities for a [...]

Military judge denies motion to allow television broadcast of Guantanamo trial

Jurist

A military judge ruled [order, PDF] Monday that he lacks authority to allow media to broadcast the trial of accused USS Cole [Navy backgrounder] bomber Abd al-Rahim Nashiri [NYT profile; JURIST news archive]. Al-Nashiri's defense lawyers moved [JURIST report] in July for the trial to be televised because there is a public interest in viewing the trial and seeing potential issues with the judicial process. Military Judge James Pohl, however, said in his order dismissing the defense's motion that Rule of Military Commissions 806(c) [text] expressly forbids "video and audio recording and taking of photographs ... in the courtroom,"...

Spanish Language Ads on the Rise in Nevada Senate Race

Hotline On Call

Sen. Dean Heller's, R-Nev., latest ad marks a recent escalation in the push for the Nevada Hispanic vote. The spot released Friday features his wife Lynne as she appeals to voters in Spanish, telling viewers about her husband's character and the good he'll do for the Hispanic community. It's the third Spanish-language ad released by the candidates this week, and the second for Heller.

Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley got things started Tuesday with a DREAM Act-themed spot, focusing on her support -- and GOP opposition -- to the bill. Berkley appears alongside Hispanic students and Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., a clear attempt to highlight her support within the Hispanic community.

The following day, Heller released a Spanish-language ad of his own, warning of a Berkley-supported tax that, according to the ad, would increase gas and energy costs dramatically. While Berkley leads among the state's Hispanics, most polling shows Heller exceeding Mitt Romney's numbers in the demographic and Berkley trailing President Obama.

Could Pennsylvania Voter ID Law Help Romney Win Race? Up to 1 Million Voters Face Disenfranchisement

DemocracyNow

With less than two months to go before the November election, we look a new voter ID law in the battleground state of Pennsylvania. Studies have shown as many as one million eligible voters in the state do not have an acceptable identification under the new law, which requires all voters to show a state driver’s license, government employee ID or a non-driver ID card issued by the state. In Philadelphia, it has been estimated that 18 percent of voters lack the proper ID. At least one Republican politician, Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Mike Turzai, has already boasted that the new voter ID law will help Mitt Romney win the state. On Thursday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court heard arguments on whether to allow the controversial law to go into effect or to approve a preliminary injunction. For more, we speak with two guests: Vic Walczak of the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania and one of the co-counsels who argued the case, and Jessie Allen, assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

Anonymous's Barrett Brown Raided & Attacked by FBI During Online Chat

Citizens for Legit Gov

For the second time this year, self-proclaimed Anonymous spokesman Barrett Brown was raided by the FBI. The latest dramatic incident occurred late Wednesday evening while Brown and another woman identified by some as his girlfriend were participating in an online chat on TinyChat with other individuals. Two minutes into the recorded chat session, loud voices could be heard in the background of Brown’s residence in Texas while the woman in the room with him was in front of the computer screen. She quickly closed the computer screen, but the audio continued to capture events in the room as the FBI appeared to strong-arm Brown to put handcuffs on him. Brown could be heard yelling in the background.

US Federal Reserve extends unlimited support to financial markets

Citizens for Legit Gov

It is a measure of the deepening crisis of global capitalism that on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the collapse of investment bank Lehman Brothers, the US Federal Reserve has decided to pump still more money into the financial system...One of the effects of the previous rounds of QE has been to fuel speculation in commodities, pushing up the prices of fuel and basic foodstuffs, which increases the hardships faced by hundreds of millions of impoverished people around the world. The jump in the prices of gold and oil after the measures were announced indicates that a new round of commodity speculation may be about to begin. What’s Happening in Libya: A Guide to the Best Coverage

ProPublica: Articles and Investigations

Here’s the best reporting we’ve found not only on yesterday’s killings but also on post-war Libya. What are we missing? Please leave your favorite stories in comments.

THE ATTACK: ITS ORIGINS AND VICTIMS

U.S. Suspects Libya Attack Was Planned, New York Times
The connection between an anti-Islam film that reportedly sparked this week’s protests in the Mideast and the attack that killed the American ambassador is unclear. Unnamed U.S. officials have told the New York Times and CNN that militants behind the attack may have instigated a protest against the film as a diversion or taken advantage of it as an opportunity.

Stevens ‘was thrilled to watch the Libyan people stand up’, YouTube
In a U.S. embassy video uploaded to YouTube in May, Ambassador Stevens introduced himselfto the Libyan people. He described his childhood in California and how he fell in love with North Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer, and compared the challenges facing Libya to the American Civil War.

Stevens: ‘The whole atmosphere has changed for the better’, International Herald Tribune
The International Herald Tribune published a tribute to Stevens from foreign correspondent Harvey Morris, which included passages from a “catch-up email”Stevens had written to family and friends in July.

The victims: Sean Smith messaged fellow gamers in hours before attack, Wired
Sean Smith, a foreign service officer stationed in Libya who was also killed, was an avid gamer whose death was first reported by his online friends. Yesterday, he wrote a message to an online gaming friend saying he hoped “we don’t die tonight.” He added, “We saw one of our ‘police’ that guard the compound taking pictures.”

Violence at demonstrations in Benghazi is not unprecedented, BBC
In 2006, during the height of the protests against the publication of cartoons depicting Mohammed in a Danish newspaper, at least 10 people were killed in Benghazi during a large demonstration. The BBC reported at the time that the Italian consulate in Benghazi had been set on aflame and police had fired on demonstrators. Protesters were reportedly angry because an Italian minister had worn a t-shirt featuring the cartoons.

THE FILM

The provenance of the movie connected to this week’s protests is murky.

A trailer for The Innocence of Muslims was posted on YouTube in July on an account bearing the name “sam bacile.” Sarah Posner of Religion Dispatches first raised questions about information “Bacile” — identified as a California real estate developer — gave to the AP and the Wall Street Journal in recent phone interviews. Christian activist Steve Klein, who has been described in the media as a consultant on the film, told the Atlantic that “Sam Bacile” was a pseudonym and he did not know the person’s true identity. The AP reported that “Bacile” is an Israeli Jew living in California and that he had raised $5 million for the film from 100 Jewish donors. But Klein told the Atlantic that “Bacile” is not Israeli.

LIBYA IN TRANSITION

With Qaddafi gone, Libya is ‘boiling over’, New York Review of Books
In June, Nicolas Pelham offered an overview of the state of Libya with a focus on outbreaks of tribal violence in the south of the country. The piece also profiles Benghazi, reporting that militias “rule in and around” the city amid a collapse of central authority.

Libya Captors Become the Captives, New York Times Magazine
In May, the magazine profiled former prisoners of the Qaddafi regime who are now in positions of power in Libya. Reporter Robert Worth summed up the state of the government: “Libya has no army. It has no government. These things exist on paper, but in practice, Libya has yet to recover from the long maelstrom of Qaddafi’s rule.”

State Dept. Warned Americans Away from Libya, Foreign Policy
Just last month, the State Department issued a travel warning against U.S. citizens visiting Libya. “The incidence of violent crime, especially carjacking and robbery, has become a serious problem,” the statement read. “In addition, political violence in the form of assassinations and vehicle bombs has increased in both Benghazi and Tripoli."

Libya Democracy Clashes with Fervor for Jihad, New York Times
A tale of two emergent political leaders in the new Libya – one, a former jihadi who has renounced violence and says he wants to promote Islamic values as a politician, and the other a militia leader who was held in Guantanamo for six years and has said he wants a Taliban-style Islamist state.

Qaddafi: King of Kings, The New Yorker
Last November, New Yorker’s Jon Lee Anderson chronicled the life of Libya’s deposed dictator Muammar Qaddafi, and how his 42-year reign devastated the country’s civil and political culture, ending in “a void, a sense that his mania had left room in the country for nothing else.”

HISTORY OF U.S.-LIBYA RELATIONS

U.S.-Led Abuse and Rendition of Opponents to Gaddafi’s Libya, Human Rights Watch
A new Human Rights Watch report includes interviews with 14 Libyans who had fled the country in the 1980s, most of them members of an anti-Qaddafi Islamist group. The Libyans interviewed said they were detained by the U.S., interrogated as terror suspects, and then sent back to Qaddafi’s Libya “at a time when Libya’s record on torture made clear they would face a serious risk of abuse.”  One described being waterboarded by his American captors in Afghanistan.

Files Note Close C.I.A. Ties to Qaddafi Spy Unit, New York Times
Documents found in an abandoned office after Qaddafi’s fall documented what appeared to be regular communications between the CIA and Britain’s MI-6 and Libyan officials about terror suspects, and suggested that prisoners were rendered to Libya for questioning.

As U.S. Rebuilt Ties with Libya, Human Rights Concerns Took Back Seat, ProPublica
The U.S. began normalizing its relations with Libya in 2004, removing the country from the list of state sponsors of terrorism in 2006. Our explainer from last year covered how oil companies were among the proponents of more engagement with the regime. Evidence also continues to emerge that the U.S. and Qaddafi cooperated on some counterterror efforts, despite the Libyan government’s often inflammatory anti-Western public rhetoric.

Obama’s defense of U.S. role in Libya, MarketWatch
Last March, President Obama defended American involvement in the Libyan conflict, saying: “I firmly believe that when innocent people are being brutalized; when someone like Gadhafi threatens a bloodbath that could destabilize an entire region; and when the international community is prepared to come together to save many thousands of lives—then it’s in our national interest to act. And it’s our responsibility. This is one of those times.”

California juveniles sentenced to life in prison might be freed

Rt.com

California Governor Jerry Brown is facing pressure to sign a bill that would give juveniles serving life without parole a chance at receiving a reduced sentence.

The bill’s sponsor, State Sen. Leland Yee, said this is not a “get-out-of-jail-free card,” but could provide a second chance to inmates who show remorse for crimes they committed in their youth. Instead of serving life in prison, they could petition for a court hearing, potentially lowering their sentence to as little as 25 years.

“It is an incredibly modest proposal that respects victims, international law and the fact that children have a greater capacity for rehabilitation than adults,” said Yee, who is also a child psychologist.

The Fair Sentencing for Youth Act has drawn support from religious leaders (including the California Catholic Bishops), child advocates, mental health professionals, law enforcement officers and civil rights groups.

The passage of SB 9 speaks volumes for who we are as a society – that we believe kids deserve a second chance,” said Yee. “The neuroscience is clear – brain maturation continues well through adolescence and thus impulse control, planning and critical thinking skills are not yet fully developed. SB 9 reflects that science and provides the opportunity for compassion and rehabilitation that we should exercise with minors.”

The legislation would allow prisoners who committed crimes as juveniles to have their cases reviewed after 15 years – thereby allowing them to go before a judge while in their 30’s.

72,000 DREAMers Applied To Remain In The Country Under Obama Administration Policy

ThinkProgress

Almost one month after young undocumented immigrants began applying for deferred action, federal immigration officials announced that about 72,000 DREAM Act-eligible young adults have applied so far. The new policy, which President Obama announced in June, gives undocumented immigrants who qualify two-year deportation deferrals and permits to legally work in the U.S.

Officials in the Department of Homeland Security have worked quickly to process applications as they have poured in, with California leading in the number of applications from undocumented immigrants in that state. The largest portion of deferred action applicants were born in Mexico, but immigration officials said a large number also came from South Koreans, who make up a much smaller population of immigrants in the U.S.

Republicans, however, are renewing their attacks against the program. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) questioned “the speed at which the deferrals are being granted” in a letter to John Morton, director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, on Tuesday and back in August, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, an informal immigration adviser to Mitt Romney, filed a lawsuit challenging the policy. Kobach is representing 10 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees who disagree with the directive. “It places ICE agents in an untenable position where their political superiors are ordering them to violate federal law,” Kobach said.
