Pat Robertson On Embassy Attack: "You Wonder What It Is In These Muslims That Causes Them To Go Crazy"

Media Matters for America

PAT ROBERTSON: You know, you wonder what it is in these Muslims that causes them to go crazy because somebody says something about Muhammad, most of which happens to be true. He took his favorite wife, when she was either 8 or 9 years old, and he was 53 and he began having sexual relations with that 8 or 9 year old child. Now we call that pedophile-pedophilia in this country. But with him it was like a holy act. He had a number of wives, and this movie showed him having sexual intercourse with one or more of his wives and I guess the Muslims got upset about that. But Muhammad was very frank about what he did and what he didn't do and you read some of the writings of Muhammad and what he has to say, it's all in there. But he seemed to, you know Muslims can have four wives and he probably had more than his quota but nevertheless, why do they riot? Why do they kill people? What is it about this religion that makes them so terribly defensive? The reason they're so defensive is because they cannot defend some of the stuff they believe and therefore they are very protective of it. What do you think? Glad to see you. I mean if a man is 53 years old and he starts having sex with an 8 year old?

Philadelphia Groups Scramble to Help Residents Get Voter ID

Colorlines

One community journalist follows the chaos of Pennsylvania's new political landscape.

Pennsylvania's Supreme Court will hear arguments Thursday to make a final decision on the state's voter ID law--and the case has drawn so much attention that a live stream has been established to watch it. But the battle over Philadelphia's voter ID isn't just being fought inside a courtroom: grassroots as well as national groups are organizing to get people the identification they need in order to cast a ballot on Election Day. But it's not easy. These groups have registered voters in the past, but navigating the requirements necessary to obtain ID requires serious resources that may not be readily available, especially in a bad economy.

Statue Honoring KKK Grand Wizard Planned on Alabama Public Land

Colorlines

A group in Selma, Ala. known as the Friends of Forrest are renovating a monument honoring Civil War Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest who was the first "Grand Wizard" of the Ku Klux Klan. The City Council approved renovation is stirring controversy because some say the statue sits on public land.

Forrest, a slave owner and a slave trader, was tapped to be the Ku Klux Klan's first Grand Wizard - or supreme leader, the KKK's highest position -- at a meeting in April 1867, according to Anti-Defamation League.

American Muslims live in fear 11 years after 9/11

CNN

My father always told me never to talk about religion, politics, or other people’s children. He was part of a generation of American Muslims who wanted to stay quiet and assimilate into American life and not rock the boat. Growing up in Southern California, I tried to follow his advice.

But after 9/11, I found that I, along with other American Muslims, have had little choice but to talk about religion.

Although countless Muslims have condemned the acts of 9/11 in the United States and worldwide, American Muslims became objects of suspicion.

Hanging White Doll in Black Face Prompts Investigation at Kaiser Hospital

NBC

Kaiser Hospital Riverside is investigating what appears to be a racist display directed at several African-American employees who work in the hospital’s IT Department.

The staffers said they work in an area that is restricted to employees only so when Xavier Fields arrived for work he was shocked to find a doll with a racial slur across its chest hanging from a post near his work station.

"It’s somebody who works within. It’s a locked area. You don’t go back there," Fields said.

The doll had its face painted black and was dangling from a rope around its neck.

Controversial Towson U Student Attempts to Create White Student Union

Inthecapitol

After garnering over 300 comments on his school’s student newspaper website and a great amount of negative attention from many on campus, Towson University student Matthew Heimbach’s wish to create a White Student Union has not been received as well as he may have thought it would be.

Relaying that the purpose of the White Student Union is solely to act like any other student union, standing as a support network for other white students on campus and praising the illustrious white figures of the past, Heimbach’s intentions are clear. “We’d also want to create a safe space for members who have filed hate/bias reports and who have had anti-white language used against them,” he explained further. “Especially the female members who have heard ‘cracker’ and ‘honkie,’ and nothing has ever come of it. It’s a support network for a campus that is hostile toward white students.” Heimbach’s assertion is that Towson’s campus is prejudiced against whites, an idea many with connections to the university find to be untrue.

Hooters Worker Wrote Anti-Asian Slur on Customers' Receipt

DNAinfo

A Fresh Meadows Hooters staffer resigned after using an anti-Asian slur to refer to a Korean-American customer on a take-out order receipt, humiliating the victim and his girlfriend, according to a new lawsuit and the restaurant.

Kisuk Cha, of Philadelphia, and 27-year-old Dayoung Choi, who he was visiting and is also of Korean descent, went to the Hooters at 61-09 190th St. to place an order of Buffalo shrimp and 10-piece chicken wings on July 1.

While they waited, they noticed that "several other employees were gawking and giggling at them," the suit, filed Monday in Brooklyn Federal Court, claims.

5 more charged in Georgia in alleged military-militia scheme of US Soldiers who Plan to Kill President

Seattle Times

Four former Army soldiers and a civilian have been charged in new indictments for connections to a militia allegedly led by a Chelan County man and other Fort Stewart, Ga., troops who authorities say stockpiled weapons and talked of overthrowing the U.S. government.

A Liberty County grand jury indicted the five on charges of illegal gang activity and various counts involving theft, burglary and auto break-ins. Those crimes were committed to help fund the militia group, called F.E.A.R., short for Forever Enduring Always Ready, District Attorney Tom Durden said Tuesday.

"The burglaries and entering autos, they were committed in an effort to fund F.E.A.R. and what F.E.A.R. was at least advocating they wanted to accomplish," said Durden, the top prosecutor for Southeast Georgia's Atlantic Judicial Circuit. Their plans included bombing a Savannah park fountain and poisoning apple crops in Washington, prosecutors say.

GOP House Nominee Opposes The Death Penalty: ‘We Have Put Innocent People To Death’

Thinkprogress

A GOP congressional nominee in Iowa has a succinct — and tragic — reason for bucking his party’s stance on the death penalty: “we have put innocent people to death.”

John Archer, the Republican challenger in Iowa’s second congressional district currently represented by Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-IA), was asked during an interview with the Des Moines Register editorial board today about any issues where he differs with his party. “I believe the Party platform calls for the death penalty and I’m personally opposed to the death penalty,” Archer said. He pointed to his experience clerking at the Illinois Supreme Court where, he saw, “firsthand” that “we have put innocent people to death.”

Obama’s big advantage: The non-white vote

TheGrio

A new CNN/ORC poll illustrates the stronghold President Obama has over the quarter of the electorate that is composed of minority voters: he leads among non-whites 88 percent to 11 percent.

That showing is even stronger than the approximately 80 percent of the minority vote Obama received in 2008. While the poll did not break down voters by race, Obama has been getting more than 90 percent of the black vote and more than 70 percent of the Latino vote many surveys.

This disparity severely complicates Mitt Romney’s strategy for winning. About a quarter of the voters in Florida and Virginia, two of the most important swing states in the election, are projected to be minorities.

theGrio

The U.S. House of Representatives on Monday night approved a resolution that will move the bust of Frederick Douglas to the Capitol, making him only the third African-American to be so honored. The other two: Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Sojourner Truth. There are 180 busts on display at the Capitol.

The bill, H.R. 6336, was sponsored by Republican congressman Dan Lundgren of California, and cosponsored by Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents the District of Columbia. A similar resolution was introduced in June by Democratic New York Sen. Chuck Schumer.

The Members Of Romney's Campaign Who Work For Fox

Media Matters

If it's hard to differentiate Fox News contributors from members of the Romney campaign, it might be because they're sometimes one in the same.

Four Fox News contributors are serving as surrogates or advisers for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign. In many instances, Fox News has failed to disclose its employees' ties to the Romney campaign while hosting them.

Another contributor, Karl Rove, is a co-founder and adviser for the super PAC American Crossroads, which is spending millions to defeat President Obama. Jay Sekulow frequently appears on Fox News to discuss legal issues and attack the Obama administration without being identified as a Romney legal adviser.

The following are the Fox News contributors who are also members of the Romney campaign.

Research Backs Up Voter Suppression Claims, But Media Stay In False-Balance Mode

Media Matters for America

The media is applying false balance to its coverage of Republican-sponsored laws that make voting more difficult. But that approach is undermined by the growing body of evidence from nonpartisan researchers showing that disenfranchisement due to new voter ID laws and restrictions on early voting is a real and growing problem.

NY Times, WSJ Employ False Balance In Coverage Of Voter Suppression

NY Times: Republicans Support Voter ID Laws And Cutbacks On Early Voting, But Democrats "Worry About What They Call Voter Suppression." From a September 9 New York Times article:

In the 2000 presidential election, a deadlock over ballot design and tallying in parts of Florida led the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, to stop a recount of ballots, which led to George W. Bush defeating Al Gore. Since then, both parties have focused on voting procedures.

The Obama campaign, for example, brought suit in Ohio over its reduction of early voting weekends used more by blacks than other groups.

Republicans have expressed concern over what they call voter integrity. They say they fear that registration drives by liberal and community groups have bloated voter rolls with the dead and the undocumented and have created loose monitoring of who votes and low public confidence in the system. They have instituted voter identification rules, cut back on early voting and sought to purge voter lists by comparing them with others, including those of the Department of Homeland Security.

Alabama asks federal appeals to reconsider immigration law

Jurist

Alabama state officials petitioned [press release] the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit [official website] on Monday to reconsider a ruling partially striking down [JURIST report] the state's immigration law [HB 56, PDF]. In August a three-judge upheld [opinion, PDF] several provisions, including one allowing police officers to check the immigration status of persons suspected of a crime, but rejected provisions making it a crime for undocumented immigrants to work or solicit work, imposing criminal penalties on persons who rent property to illegal immigrants and requiring state officials to check the immigration status of children in public...
