White Robbinsville Police Officer Goes Off - Attacks Disabled White woman in wheelchair

A Robbinsville police officer was charged with aggravated assault following an attack on a 45-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son Monday night at Project Freedom, which provides housing for the disabled.

Sgt. Mark Lee was on-duty during the assaults, which took place as a wheelchair-bound relative of the victims looked on in horror.

Lee was charged with official misconduct, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of endangering the welfare of a child, five counts of aggravated assault upon a police officer, and one count each of burglary, harassment and criminal mischief.

On Monday about 9:30 p.m., Robbinsville police responded to a residence at Project Freedom on a report that a woman was being assaulted, according to a news release from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. Witness statements allege Lee entered the home and followed the woman and child into a bathroom; a struggle ensued and Lee assaulted both of them.

“He just went off his rocker,” said Bill Sabo, the father of the female victim. “He ripped off all his clothes, threw them on the floor, knocked my daughter out of her wheelchair and began choking her.”

The mother and child were able to make their way into the master bedroom with a caretaker and call the police. Lee proceeded to break into the bedroom, knock the mother from her wheelchair and assault her again. Sabo was in the living room and confined to his wheelchair as the incident unfolded.

When police responded minutes later, Lee was sitting on a couch in the residence repeatedly saying “I did a bad thing,” according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

He was taken into police custody but escaped after kicking out the side rear window of a police car as he was being taken away. He was arrested after a foot chase and a struggle.

Malema: Cops threatened to kill me

Expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema claims police threatened to kill him at Wonderkop Stadium when he was denied entry on Monday.

"Police threatened to isolate us and kill us," Malema told reporters in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
"They pushed us out against our will... even though we were invited there to speak."

On Monday, police stopped Malema at the gates of the stadium, where striking miners had gathered to be briefed on developments about their wage demands.

After a lengthy discussion with police, Malema drove off, escorted by about 10 police vans.

A police helicopter circled above, while police on foot patrol ran to points of entry at the stadium to stop Malema if he attempted to return.

ACLU urges NC racial profiling victims to come forward

The North Carolina chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is asking drivers who believe they are the victims of racial profiling by police officers to come forward and tell their stories.

The group posted two forms on its website – a general complaint form and a checkpoint complaint form – asking possible victims of racial profiling to document their experiences to help lobby state legislators or, if necessary, to file lawsuits.

The request was prompted by a 2012 study released by a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor analyzing data recorded from more than 13 million traffic stops in the state.

The study reported that Latinos are 96 percent more likely than whites to have their vehicles searched during a traffic stop, while blacks are 77 percent more likely to be searched than whites.

Several drivers from different parts of the state spoke Tuesday about their personal experiences with local police.

"I've been pulled over for no reason at all. I've been dragged out of my vehicle. I've been handcuffed, humiliated, harassed," said driver Lelynd Darkes. "I feel like my voice is the voice of thousands of young African-American men."

Darkes says he has been stopped four times in the past year and a half and searched when he has broken no laws.

How can his so-called concern for the poor and middle class coexist with his association with Walmart, and Nationwide Insurance, for example? And how can he claim to be concerned about the Black community and then seek to pad his pockets by promoting R. Kelly, who was tried for allegedly appearing in an underground video of himself molesting a 14 year-old child? And how can Cornel West claim to “love Black people” when he has never taught at a school that the vast majority of Black people could afford to attend in his entire career? There are many other things I could list about West, but his coalition with Ralph Nader that got George Bush elected in the 2000 election (Bush won by 537 votes. The Nader-West coalition peel off 97,488 votes in Florida alone), and his mere association with Tavis Smiley says it all. West reminds me of a guy running down the street ranting about fascism after just having lunch with Mussolini.

Idaho White Supremacist Gang Members Slapped With Gun, Drug Indictments

Flanked by a cadre of local law enforcement, including Boise, Caldwell, Meridian and Nampa police, U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson announced Tuesday afternoon that a federal grand jury has handed down indictments of 21 members of the Aryan Knights gang, a white supremacist gang operating in and out of Idaho prisons.

Law enforcement charged 12 current inmates in Idaho prisons, and arrested five more people this morning. Four more individuals remain at-large. The 21 are charged with distributing methamphetamine and possessing firearms.

"With these indictments and arrests, we have made the streets safer and weakened the operations of the Aryan Knights," said Olson.

South Africa: 85 Years for a Crime He Did Not Commit

South Africans should know that as their government contemplates extending an economic lifeline to Swaziland's profligate king and court, a South African man is being left to rot in Swaziland's jails. Last month, the Swazi High Court convicted South African, Amos Mbulaheni Mbedzi, of sedition, murder, unlawful possession of explosives and immigration offences - on the most flimsy 'evidence'. Indeed, the real crime has surely been perpetrated not by Mbedzi but by the court - and Swaziland's 'justice system' - against him. Especially now that he has been sentenced to 85 years in prison.

Mbedzi's crimes allegedly occurred in the context of an attempt to place explosives under a bridge near important Swazi government and royal buildings - part of an ostensible plan by an opposition group to overthrow the current absolute monachy. Two men, also alleged to have been party to this plan - a Swazi citizen, Musa Dlamini, and another South African, Jack Govender - were killed as a result - it was claimed - of an error while attempting to assemble the explosives. It is their deaths for which Mbedzi was convicted of murder.

Yet, there was little real evidence to refute Mbedzi's defence that he was not party to any criminal plan - that he had no knowledge of the explosives; that he understood that the car in which he, Dlamini and Govender were travelling in had stopped under the bridge in order to collect another colleague; and that he had left the car to relieve himself and was some distance away when the vehicle exploded although still sufficiently near that he was injured.

Kwame Kilpatrick has tough battle ahead to get trial moved

With his jury almost seated, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick made a last-minute request that rarely gets honored: move the trial somewhere else.

Kilpatrick's lawyer James Thomas asked for a change of venue in the federal public corruption trial Tuesday, saying negative news media coverage -- especially in recent days -- has made it virtually impossible for Kilpatrick to get a fair trial.

Legal experts say it's tough to win that argument.

No Apology from Mittens: "47 Percent" Fundraiser Host is Undercover Freak who threw Sex Parties @ same crib

Leder has long been a fan of Romney.  In August 2011, the New York Post reported,

But the revelry hit a frenzied point the next day before midnight when a male guest described as a "chubby white meathead" and a "tanned" female guest stripped and hopped into the pool naked.

Elvis Dumervil To File Lawsuit Against Miami Police Department, According To Report

Denver Broncos defensive lineman Elvis Dumervil will file a lawsuit against the Miami police, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. According to Dumervil's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, the lawsuit will be filed against the police department and the city of Miami for false arrest and defamation.

Dumervil was arrested in July for felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly brandishing a weapon in his waistband during a traffic altercation. Dumervil was accused of showing a gun to another driver after apparently being cut off during slow traffic.

The Broncos lineman had said at the the time that the "truth will come out" and that he was innocent of the charges, with those close to Dumervil stating that he was not carrying a gun and that neither the Land Rover nor a confiscated gun belonged to him.

Charges were formally dropped against Dumervil on Aug. 7.

South Africa Getting Shut Down by Strikers: $563M lost in gold, platinum production

Detailing the heavy financial toll of unrest in South Africa's crucial mining sector, President Jacob Zuma said Monday that strikes have cost close to 4.5 billion rand (nearly $563 million) in lost gold and platinum production this year while a major company announced it is halting construction of a platinum mine shaft, putting 1,200 people out of work.

The strikes that have stopped work at seven gold and platinum mines also spread to the chrome sector, according to the South African Press Association. And police blocked politician Julius Malema, a diehard Zuma opponent, from addressing some 3,000 strikers gathered at a stadium at the Lonmin mine at Marikana, northwest of Johannesburg.

"Arrest him!" one officer ordered, giving Malema 20 minutes to leave or face arrest. This caused Malema to take off with his entourage.

"I'm leaving. We're getting out of here. Why are you chasing me? Are you going to shoot me?" Malema taunted, a reference to the police shooting of striking Lonmin miners, killing 34, on Aug. 16 in the worst state violence since apartheid ended in 1994.

Malema sprinted to his all-terrain vehicle and sped off. Police piled into two armored cars and two other vehicles and followed on muddy dirt tracks that wind through a tin-shack neighborhood with no water or electricity and where thousands of Lonmin's miners live. The police vehicles and a helicopter hovering above the politician's car checked that he left without speaking to any crowds. Police said they were preventing him from addressing an illegal gathering.

Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz’s attempt to cross-reference the eligibility of 3,500 voters with a federal immigration database was put on hold when a judge placed a temporary injunction on the process. Judge Mary Pat Gunderson wrote the rules “have in fact created confusion and mistrust in the voter registration process [and] have created fear that new citizens will lose their right to vote and/or be charged with a felony and [have] caused some qualified voters to feel deterred from even registering to vote.” Similar purges in Florida and Colorado uncovered almost “no confirmed noncitizens.”

Pardons Board Denies Clemency to Black Man on Death-Row: Experts Say Was Sexually Abused By The Men He Killed

The Pennsylvania Board of Pardons denied clemency today to the Pennsylvania inmate who faces execution Oct. 3 for killing two men that he alleges sexually abused him.

Three out of the five board members voted to spare Terrance “Terry” Williams from a sentence of death, but a unanimous vote was required. Reports the Philadelphia Inquirer:

With Williams’ state and federal appeals exhausted all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the 46-year-old former Germantown High School quarterback’s last hope of escaping becoming the first person executed in Pennsylvania in 13 years lies in a hearing Thursday before Philadelphia Common Pleas M. Teresa Sarmina.

The clemency petition filed on behalf of Williams was supported by 22 former prosecutors and judges, 34 law professors, 40 mental health professionals and more than 36 religious leaders, and urged the board to spare from execution a man with an extensive childhood history of abuse that was never revealed to the jury. Even the widow of one of the victims submitted a letter asking that his life be spared. It was accompanied by a letter from 26 child advocates and sexual abuse experts, which stated: “The evidence of abuse in this case is clear. There can be no doubt that Terry was repeatedly and violently abused and exploited as a child and teenager by manipulative older men. Terry’s acts of violence have, alas, an explanation of the worst sort: enveloped by anger and self-hatred, Terry lashed out and killed two of the men who sexually abused him and caused him so much pain.”

The clemency petition explained:

At the time of the killing, Terry was only three and a half months past his eighteenth birthday, the minimum age for the imposition of the death penalty. On that tragic day, Terry and another 18-year-old, Marc Draper, beat Mr. Norwood to death in a cemetery in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia.

At trial, the jury was informed that Terry had prior convictions for a 1982 armed robbery and the 1984 killing of Herbert Hamilton, which Terry committed at ages 16 and 17, respectively. The jury never learned, however, that both Herbert Hamilton and Amos Norwood had sexually abused Terry, or that both killings directly related to Terry’s history of sexual abuse by these and older males, which began when Terry was only six years old. In fact, jurors heard very little about Terry’s childhood, which was marked not only by over a decade of sexual abuse, but by years of physical and emotional abuse, neglect and abandonment by those who were supposed to love and care for him. The unrelenting abuse and neglect made Terry an easy target for sexual predators. […]

Five of the jurors from Terry’s capital trial agree that Terry’s life should be spared. In recent sworn statements, they have explained that if they had known the truth about Terry’s childhood, the fact that he was exploited and sexually assaulted by the men he killed, as well as the fact that a life sentence meant life without parole, they never would have sentenced Terry to death.

Mittens Stands by Claim that 47% Of Americans Are ‘Dependent’ On Government in Undercover Video

Responding to an undercover video showing Mitt Romney claiming that President Obama’s voters — 47% of Americans — are “dependent upon government” and “believe they are victims,” the GOP presidential candidate’s campaign stood by the former governor’s claim. “As the governor has made clear all year, he is concerned about the growing number of people who are dependent on the federal government, including the record number of people who are on food stamps, nearly one in six Americans in poverty, and the 23 million Americans who are struggling to find work,” Romney spokesperson Gail Gitcho said in a statement. RNC Chairman Reince Preibus agreed, telling CNN, “No, I don’t think the candidate’s off message at all.”

The Bush Administration’s Oft-Repeated (and Now Challenged) Waterboarding Claims

For many years, Bush administration officials have said that the CIA waterboarded only three terror suspects. Despite nearly endless revelations and investigations about the U.S.'s treatment of detainees, there has never been evidence contradicting those claims. But that changed earlier this month.

Human Rights Watch recently released a report detailing the accounts of 14 Libyan men who claim they were detained and, in some cases, subject to harsh interrogations by the U.S. before being transferred back to Libyan prisons, where they also faced abuse.

One man, Mohammed Al-Shoreoiya, provided a detailed account of being waterboarded "many times" while in U.S. custody in an Afghan prison between 2003 and 2004. Another man described a similar form of water torture, conducted without a board.

None of the men's accounts could be confirmed, but as the New York Times noted, the detainees did not seek out Human Rights Watch, and their descriptions of their treatment, including waterboarding, are consistent with CIA procedural documents that have been made public.

The most recent issue of Newsweek features on the cover stereotypically angry Arab men, presumably from inside a recent anti-American protest, with the headline "MUSLIM RAGE." The pushback against the cover was immediate and strong. Yousef Munayyer, the executive director of the Jerusalem Fund, described the cover in an interview with Politico as "extremely unhelpful" and "playing to Islamophobic stereotypes."

In promoting their cover story by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Newsweek attempted to engage with those outraged at the cover image by promoting the hashtag #MuslimRage on twitter:

On Tim Kaine's New Spanish-Language TV Ad

In this morning's Hotline Sort, we flagged that Virginia Democratic Senate nominee Tim Kaine released a new Spanish-language television ad -- his second of the campaign. Worth noting about the ad: The appeal to Spanish-speaking voters comes days after a poll showed Kaine underperforming President Obama among non-white voters in the state.

While 77 percent of non-white voters supported Obama in the NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist survey that showed Kaine in a dead heat with GOP nominee George Allen, Kaine brought in 67 percent of non-white voter support. The two had nearly identical support among white voters: Kaine had 38 percent compared to Obama's 39 percent.

The new Spanish-language ad hits on a number of different areas. One man says Kaine supports immigration reform. A woman says he'll ensure better education access. Another says he appreciates her and her culture. And another man says Kaine will work to bring good jobs. The previous Spanish television ad, released in late August, touched on similar themes: Education, immigration reform, supporting small businesses.

More evidence that President Obama has a big lead in the key state of Pennsylvania. A new Philadelphia Inquirer Pennsylvania Poll puts Obama ahead of Republican Mitt Romney by 50%-39%, putting the incumbent in position for a sixth straight Democratic win in the Keystone State. The Inquirer reports that "the Romney camp clearly has signaled doubts about Pennsylvania by slashing TV ads and candidate appearances. Obama, too, has cut back, and the state lags behind Ohio, Florida, and other swing states as targets for the most intensive campaigning."

UN rights chief urges halt to violence
