Pro Torture Republican Congressman Seeks to Dismiss Murder Charges Against US Soldier who Killed Iraqis

A North Carolina congressman is backing a resolution that seeks dismissal of charges against a Camp Lejeune Marine accused of premeditated murder in the shooting deaths of two suspected insurgents in Iraq. 2nd Lt. Ilario Pantano, 33, is accused of shooting two unarmed Iraqi suspects in the back. Pantano's unit had stopped the Iraqis on April 15, as they tried to drive away from a house in Mahmudiyah, Iraq, that the Marines had been ordered to search. An Article 32 hearing is scheduled for April 25, at which a hearing officer would determine whether the military should proceed with a court-martial. Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-NC, introduced a resolution Thursday expressing support for Pantano and calling on the government to dismiss charges. Jones' resolution said Pantano "was defending the cause of freedom, democracy and liberty in his actions." Jones also wrote President Bush last month asking for support for Pantano. He said in the letter that he was concerned that accusations against Pantano, who was cleared by a field level investigation, would cause other Marines to question their future actions and endanger their lives and their missions.
