ACLU pushing for death penalty moratorium
Support is growing on a key legislative committee for a bill that would
abolish Connecticut's death penalty, possibly before serial killer
Michael Ross' scheduled May Eleventh execution.
Representative Michael Lawlor, who is co-chairman of the Judiciary
Committee, said today it appears that an abolition bill could pass out
of the committee next week. Lawlor says it remains questionable
whether there is enough support in the legislature to pass an abolition
bill. Lawlor said there could be more support for a temporary
moratorium. That proposal is being pushed by the
American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut if lawmakers don't
eliminate capital punishment. [more]
