Roberto Rivera-Soto was sworn in yesterday
as the first Hispanic justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court.
Associate Justice Virginia Long administered the oath of office during
a private ceremony. A ceremonial swearing-in is scheduled for Sept. 14.
Rivera-Soto, of Haddonfield, replaced Peter J. Verniero, who retired
Tuesday. Rivera-Soto, 50, is a career trial lawyer best known in the
legal community for the 10 years he represented an Atlantic City
casino. He most recently worked for a Philadelphia law firm. Nominated
in April by Gov. McGreevey, Rivera-Soto had no judicial experience and
declined during his Senate confirmation hearing in June to comment on
what positions he would take on topics such as abortion and the death
penalty. [more ]
