When a special military tribunal for four alleged
terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base began Tuesday,
representatives from three human rights organizations were barred from
press briefings, denied access to commission officials, kept from Camp
Delta, where the detainees are held. The groups have yet to receive
security credentials, according to reports posted on the American Civil
Liberties Union website, a statement posted on the Amnesty
International website, and the Washington Post .Few outsiders are
allowed into the detention facilities, and fewer still are allowed into
the proceedings, according to ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero.
Acting as the ACLU's representative at Guantanamo Bay, Romero is there
with a contingency that includes members of Amnesty International,
Human Rights Watch and the American Bar Association. [more ]
