Republican voters on Tuesday chose brewing magnate Peter Coors
while Democrats selected state Attorney General Ken Salazar to
run in November for the U.S. Senate seat from Colorado, a state
that could be crucial in deciding which party controls the
legislative chamber. With about 60 percent of the vote counted, Coors
was leading former U.S. Congressman Bob Schaffer 60 percent to
40 percent, while Salazar was ahead with 76 percent of the
vote against Mike Miles, a public school administrator, who got
24 percent. Salazar, the first Hispanic to be elected to
statewide office in Colorado, was congratulated by U.S. Sen. Jon
Corzine, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign
