Judge Junks Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s suit

A Cook County circuit judge Wednesday dismissed U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s suit against south suburban power brokers William and Robert Shaw over their support for a candidate in the 2002 Democratic primary with the same name as the Congressman. The lawsuit alleged the Shaws fraudulently collected signatures on nominating petitions for an elderly Robbins man also named Jesse Jackson. The civil complaint accused the Shaws, who are longtime political foes of Mr. Jackson's, of backing a look-alike candidate simply to confuse voters. [more] Judge Allen Goldberg said "it is unfortunate" the Cook County state's attorney didn't take up the fight against the same-name candidate. However, after the Shaws pleaded the Fifth Amendment to all questions asked of them, it left no proof that they had a hand in planting a candidate in a race against their political nemesis. [more]
