General overseeing prison abuse investigation asks to be removed

The top general in Iraq, Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez , has asked to be replaced as the senior officer overseeing the investigation into military intelligence officers' actions at Abu Ghraib prison. Sanchez also requested that a higher-ranking officer take over the lead in the probe from Army Maj. Gen. George Fay. A Pentagon spokesman said the move was designed to open up the investigation to include higher-ranking officials in Iraq who could not have been investigated by a lower-ranking officer. Some questioned whether the initial appointments were designed to contain the investigation to lower levels. [more]
