Coalition Action Urged to Stop Police Brutality in Milwaukee
We Milwaukeeans of all races who are appalled by the verdict need to organize ourselves now into a multi-racial coalition to: Demand of Mayor Tom Barrett, every member of the Milwaukee Common Council, Clerk of Circuit Courts James Barrett, County Exec. Scott Walker, every member of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, and Dist. Atty. E. Michael McCann answers to the following questions:
- What do you think of the verdict?
- If you are not satisfied with the verdict, what specific steps will you personally take to prevent this from happening again?
- Do you believe there exists within the Milwaukee Police Department a culture of (a) racism, and (b) police impunity?
- If so, what specific steps will you personally take to (a) get them off the force, (b) prevent racists from joining the MPD in the future, and (c) end "the code of silence" and every other aspect of police impunity in this city?
- I think those of us who are appalled by this latest example of the complete and utter failure of our local criminal justice system to actually provide justice for all Milwaukeeans regardless of race should call a public meeting downtown soon to talk about where to go from here. At that meeting, provision should be made for simultaneous interpretation between English, Hmong, and Spanish.
Black Milwaukee needs to know that it does not stand alone in this moment. The recent (lagely Latino) protest in defense of the undocumented shows the enormous potential for action within that community. Combined with the rage undoubtedly being felt universally within the black community, along with the many white, Asian, and Native American Milwaukeeans appalled by the verdict, at this moment we can and must build a very broad movement for change. - Submitted by Anthony Rupert
