Jacksonville Officer Resigns after Killing Black Man
The officer at the center of controversy surrounding the death of Sammy Evans who died while in police custody, was already under investigation by the Internal Affairs Office of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. On Saturday night, JSO released the findings of its investigation into allegations of unnecessary force against Officer K.D. Underwood. ' The investigation stemmed from a complaint made by a fellow rookie cop who claimed Underwood kicked a juvenile three times with his knee while the young man was handcuffed on the ground in September 2004.Tonight the family and friends of Samuel Evans are left to grieve for a father, a brother, an uncle and a friend. But at the same time they're hoping for what they call, 'justice' from the sheriff's department. They say they want criminal charges filed against former officer Underwood. Samuel Evans' brother, Barney Evans, spoke on behalf of the family. "What would help and begin some healing and begin to make the community feel a little better (is) if Underwood, the cop that resigned and his buddies that were with him, the other four, that they resign, (with) no pension.
