From [Politico] President-elect Donald Trump wants his Cabinet to include a Hispanic official, Politico reported Thursday. Trump has only a handful of Cabinet positions left unfilled and is seeking to increase diversity in his administration.

Trump's team is primarily looking at Agriculture secretary to add a Latino, but also could do so with Veterans Affairs secretary and the U.S. trade representative, the report said.

“I can tell you now I have spoken to numerous folks on the transition, and they say that he’s absolutely looking for qualified Latinos for a Cabinet post,” said Mario Rodriguez, who sits on Trump’s Hispanic advisory committee.

“President-elect Trump was very impressed with the candidates [he’s considered]. He wants to put a Latino in the Cabinet, he’s not doing it just for show.”

Trump launched his presidential campaign by calling Mexicans "rapists" and made a U.S.-Mexico border wall one of the central proposals of his campaign. He also feuded publicly with Spanish-language media outlets such as Univision and attacked a U.S.-born federal judge for having Mexican heritage.

North Carolina NAACP Makes Push To End the use of solitary confinement for juveniles

The head of the North Carolina NAACP said his organization will conduct a statewide investigation into the use of solitary confinement for juveniles – and will push for an end to the practice.

“We are talking about young people who have not even been convicted. And they’re treated like the worst of criminals,” said the Rev. William Barber, the state NAACP’s president. “ … Getting in trouble doesn’t mean you can be tortured at the hands of the government.”

Barber’s comments come in response to Charlotte Observer stories this week showing that more than 110 juveniles were held in solitary confinement at Mecklenburg County’s Jail North in 2016 as they awaited trial. The 16- and 17-year-olds spend 23 hours alone in their cells as punishment for fighting, stealing or breaking other jail rules. They are allowed no visitors, no phone calls and no library books.

Many spend months in the jail awaiting trial. Some are never convicted.

Research has shown that solitary confinement can cause depression, anxiety, hallucinations and rage in adults. And experts say the experience can be even harder on youths, who don’t have the same psychological tools to cope with the stress.

President Obama in January banned solitary for youths in federal custody. Five months later, North Carolina officials announced a similar ban in the state prison system.

But in some county jails – including Jail North in Charlotte, the jail in downtown Raleigh and the High Point Detention Center – 16- and 17-year-olds who violate rules are still held in solitary confinement.

Jail officials in Mecklenburg County say they need to separate troublemakers from the general population.

“If a youthful offender is being disruptive or dangerous, we must separate that person from the general population to prevent further escalation of dangerous/disruptive behavior,” Sheriff Irwin Carmichael wrote in a statement.

Children who go through juvenile detention often lead adult lives plagued by incarceration, unemployment and other woes, and the problem is most drastic among African-American men, according to a new study by Northwestern University medical school professors.

The study — believed by its authors to be the first of its kind — found that African-American males who had been in Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center in their youth struggled more than their white and Hispanic counterparts with employment and family life, among other areas.

Rather, she said, juvenile detention facilities disproportionately take in kids who already suffer the disadvantages of poverty, broken schools and other social ills.

Detention, and the consequences of carrying criminal records, may in turn increase the challenges kids face as they grow older, she said.

"To me, the obvious solution is to improve our educational system, not just in wealthy neighborhoods, but in all neighborhoods … so that all kids have an equal chance of achieving the American dream," she said.

The Northwestern Juvenile Project has for years followed some 1,800 people who came into the detention center in the late 1990s, and researchers have interviewed them face to face periodically. The researchers tracked their employment, education, family life, housing, substance use and any further arrests, among other topics.

A prior study had found that 111 of the study participants had died as of December 2011, the majority of them by homicides committed with guns, indicating a death rate vastly higher than that of the general population.

The findings of the new study were similarly bleak. After 12 years, only 1 in 5 males and 1 in 2 females had attained what the study described as "positive outcomes" in more than half of the areas of their lives that researchers studied. Only half of the participants obtained a high school diploma or its equivalent, a rate significantly lower than that of the general population; only 1 out of 5 males was working full time or in school.

The results were worst for African-American men, who trailed other study participants in numerous categories. White male participants, for example, had more than five times better odds of being in school or employed full time than African-American males after 12 years.

Hispanic male study participants tended to have fewer problems than African-American male participants, but fared worse than their white counterparts.

VIRTUAL REALITY AS a medium is still in its infancy, but the kinds of behaviors it captures have long been a holy grail for marketers and data-monetizing companies like Facebook. Using cookies, beacons, and other ubiquitous tracking code, online advertisers already record the habits of web surfers using a wide range of metrics, from what sites they visit to how long they spend scrolling, highlighting, or hovering over certain parts of a page. Data behemoths like Google also scan emails and private chats for any information that might help “personalize” a user’s web experience — most importantly, by targeting the user with ads.

But those metrics are primitive compared to the rich portraits of physical user behavior that can be constructed using data harvested from immersive environments, using surveillance sensors and techniques that have already been controversially deployed in the real world.

“The information that current marketers can use in order to generate targeted advertising is limited to the input devices that we use: keyboard, mouse, touch screen,” says Michael Madary, a researcher at Johannes Gutenberg University who co-authored the first VR code of ethics with Thomas Metzinger earlier this year. “VR analytics offers a way to capture much more information about the interests and habits of users, information that may reveal a great deal more about what is going on in [their] minds.”

[ThinkProgress] As white right-wing politicians around the world gathered power by scapegoating non-white immigrants for the economic struggles of working people, the world’s richest people got nearly a quarter trillion dollars richer in 2016.

The 500 wealthiest individuals on a planet of roughly 8 billion humans gained $237 billion in personal net worth over the year, according to Bloomberg.

Those massive investment gains followed similarly massive convulsions — a natural byproduct of beginning the investing year with incredible wealth. The same microfraction of the species was almost $400 billion in the hole by Valentine’s Day, then up more than $300 billion in the months before Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in November’s election, before slumping to the mere $237,000,000,000 net gain by year’s end, Bloomberg reports.

The poorest 2.4 billion adults worldwide have an average wealth of under a thousand bucks, and a combined net worth of 2.36 trillion. The 500 people on Bloomberg’s list ended the year with close to double that between them: $4.4 trillion.

In other words, capitalism has decided that one crowded nightclub’s worth of people are worth twice as much as a human herd that could fill the cavernous Indianapolis Motor Speedway six thousand times over — assuming none of them brought their children along.

Such inequality isn’t just a condition of economic strife. It’s a cause of it. Yet in countries around the world, the broke billions are being encouraged to blame their own dire straits on other poor people. And it’s working. Xenophobic, nativist politicians on the extreme right edge of the traditional political spectrum have captured a larger and larger share of power.

Trump’s win in November, like the victory of pro-Brexit campaigners in the summer, suggests that the economically oppressed are embracing paranoid, mathematically insane explanations of why their lives are so rotten. Liberal political values seem poised to fall soon in France, Germany, and Brazil. The Trumps and Le Pens of the world are winning at the ballot box even as the evidence grows starker that inequality is to blame for the hardships these populists’ supporters endure.

The idea that democracies cannot survive intense maldistribution of wealth for very long is not new. But the sheer speed of this transformation is nonetheless breathtaking.

The fall of the liberal idea comes barely five years after a very different political moment around the world, where populists were in the streets decrying the wealthy, the financial industry, and their government abettors. Protests from Wall Street to Madrid to Athens to Reykjavik targeted not immigrants or refugees or government benefits programs, but concentrated wealth.

Sooner or later, governments called down the police on those same protesters. Few of those governments took any aggressive policy steps to redress inequality, or even to repair the devastation of the 2008 financial crisis. The already severe concentration of global wealth in a few hundred hands intensified.

And now, those same masses who rode a leftward breeze for a year or two have retreated — or simply turned right.

Media - A mind shampoo and conditioning process of the Greater System. From [HERE] The New York Times’ Amy Chozick argued that President-elect Donald Trump should be given credit for using Twitter as he continues to avoid the press, normalizing his tweets as “refreshing” and ignoring the fact that Trump’s tweets have dangerously breached international precedent, swung stock prices, and promoted neo-Nazis, among other embarrassments.

On the December 27 edition of MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, Chozick joined a panel with Azi Paybarah of Politico and Caitlin Huey-Burns of Real Clear Politics to discuss Trump’s recent Twitter use. Chozick conceded that a president-elect should explain his policy positions in “more than 140 characters,” but still argued Trump deserves  “a little bit of credit” for using Twitter to speak to his supporters because, according to her, President Barack Obama struggled to speak to his supporters early in his presidency.

Chozick went on to compare Trump’s reckless and amateurish approach to presidential communications with Obama’s, who she criticized as being “more thoughtful and careful about everything,” seeming to consider Obama's approach a negative characteristic in a president. As for Trump, she described his Twitter use as “refreshing.”

But Trump’s temperamental outbursts in 140 characters or less are far from praiseworthy by any reasonable standard and should not be a form of presidential communication or policy-making indulged -- or normalized -- by the press as Chozick suggested.

As Greg Sargent explained in The Washington Post, arms control experts noted that Trump could exacerbate nuclear tensions in an international crisis if his tweets are interpreted incorrectly, such as when he recently tweeted that he wanted to “greatly strengthen and expand” the United States’ “nuclear capability.” Trump has already caused a serious strain in the U.S. relationship with one major nuclear power -- China -- after he bizarrely tweeted that he took an unprecedented call from the Taiwanese President (followed by several tweets attacking China).

Trump has also used Twitter to bully American companies and citizens into submitting to his poorly reasoned demands and embracing his falsehoods. Trump sent the stocks of Lockheed Martin and Boeing into a freefall at various times earlier this month when he tweeted that he was going to cancel Boeing’s contract for the new Air Force One over cost and, later, Lockheed Martin’s over the cost of the F-35 fighter jet. In addition, after Trump falsely claimed he was saving 1,100 jobs at a Carrier factory in Indiana, he used his account to attack Chuck Jones, a union boss at the Carrier plant who pointed out that many people were still losing their jobs, prompting many Trump supporters to send death threats to Jones and his family.

Trump has also outrageously used Twitter to mainstream dangerous hate and bigotry by consistently retweeting white nationalist and “alt-right” Twitter accounts. During his campaign, Trump retweeted several neo-Nazi and white nationalist sympathizing twitter accounts, including one with the handle @WhiteGenocideTM, which according to ThinkProgress, “tweets obsessively about white women allegedly being raped by various minority groups.”

Chozick’s defense of Trump is another example of how media figures are normalizing Trump’s hostility toward and complete disregard for the press. Time and again since the election, Trump has broken serious norms, with members of the press enabling his behavior by sanitizing his ties to extremists, echoing his lies, and whitewashing his comments.

New Report Shows Blacks in Colorado are disproportionately arrested, more likely to be imprisoned

From [DenverPost] A first stab at understanding the statewide relationship between race and the criminal justice system shows black men and women in Colorado were arrested or issued citations at a disproportionate rate last year, and were more likely than any other racial or ethnic group to receive prison sentences. Though they represent just 4.2 percent of the state’s population, a Colorado Division of Criminal Justice report found that blacks accounted for 12.4 percent of the arrests and summonses in 2015. The findings also show those accusations were more frequently for serious charges, including assault, aggravated assault, homicide, robbery and weapons-related offenses.

The report also showed that black juveniles were more likely than their counterparts of other races or ethnicities to be sentenced to the state’s youth detention system.

Observers say the review is an important step toward equity in policing, the courtroom and prisons, but caution that a deep analysis of the findings — and possibly more information — is needed to really understand what the data mean.

“We need to drill down a little further and be analytic and strategic about what these statistics are showing us,” said state Rep. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, who sponsored the legislation that required the data to be gathered. “It can show us what legislative action might be necessary, what training might be necessary. I think we just need to study the results and see where that drives the next steps. I think data drives informed decisions.”

The findings stem from the 2015 Community Law Enforcement Action Reporting Act that mandated analysis and reporting of racial data provided by Colorado law enforcement agencies. For the CLEAR Act report, which was released Wednesday night in a 74-page examination, more than 325,000 arrests, summonses, court filings and parole-board decisions were reviewed.

The data release comes at a time when race and its relationship to criminal justice system are under both the national and local spotlight. The Denver Police Department, for example, is working to determine how it will collect racial data about the people officers stop after years of saying the work would be too difficult and expensive to implement.

“None of the data answered questions as to why these disparities occur,” Colorado Department of Public Safety research director Kim English, lead author of the report, said in a written statement. “This study provides data and analysis that can serve as a tool for decision-makers who are continually working to make our state’s criminal justice system work better for the citizens it serves.”

It is a change that, if properly understood and allowed, occurs only within—inside of us when we elect to be the Christmas story.

When Christ consciousness becomes your consciousness Christmas has happened—it is your gift to yourself, bringing joy into your life and to your family. Christ is not a person, nor is Jesus' last name—it is the name for the ultimate state of consciousness in human form. The word 'Christ' comes from the Sanskrit word "Krishna." You can never be Jesus (the made-up Greek name to give embodied form to Christ consciousness in allegorical story), but you can become Christ. That is what the Christmas story is all about. If you are a Christian, then it is impossible to be a Christ. You can't be both. Once you become a Christian, you have cut yourself off from becoming or being Christ. A follower is an imitator. You cannot follow religion and have the Christ bom within you.  You cannot be part of any religion and have Christmas unfold within you.

Can you bring Christmas out of the allegorical myth into the reality of your life? Allow the stable to be the place where the virgin consciousness gives birth to the Christ child inside of you. Can you allow the story of Christmas to take place inside of you? Are you prepared to leave the inn, which is the mind with all of its chattering and conflicting thoughts? Are you prepared to become a shepherd and watch?   Are you prepared for the wise men—for the wisdom to come from the right hemisphere of the brain?  Are you prepared to visit the stable—which is the quiet place inside of you despite your animal nature? Are you prepared to rise above the thoughts (sheep) of the mind to create the virgin consciousness necessary for the birth of the Christ child? Are you prepared for that light of the star to come and enter into the lotus which is the pineal gland (single eye)?  

If you are prepared, Christmas will come and Christ consciousness will arrive—an amazingly beautiful gift to oneself and a joy to the world. If your eye be single, your body will fill with light. The kingdom of God is within you. In Christ Consciousness the kingdom of God has come to life within you.   The first thing Jesus admonished us to do is to seek the kingdom of heaven inside of you before anything else. The key of knowledge is hidden within you (the pearl of great price). That key of knowledge is taken away when you don't enter within yourself.  

The key to the birth of Christ consciousness is watching yourself—self-observation in deep meditation. You must separate from thoughts to achieve this birth within you.

By far the most populous of the three states that strip lifelong voting rights from people with felony convictions, Florida is home to some 1.5 million residents who can never again cast a ballot unless pardoned by the state’s governor, according to a calculation by The Sentencing Project.

Florida’s legions of disenfranchised voters are disproportionately Democrat-leaning minorities — including nearly a quarter of Florida’s black population — numbers that advocates say amount to a long-standing and often ignored civil rights catastrophe. This racial skew means that the state’s mass disenfranchisement could have changed the outcome of some particularly important elections — such as Bush v. Gore — and thus the direction of modern American history itself. Most recently, after the state’s Republican governor clamped down on the ability of ex-felons to have their rights restored, Donald Trump won the crucial swing state by a margin less than a tenth the size of the state’s disenfranchised population, leading some to question the effect that felony disenfranchisement may have had on the size of Trump’s Electoral College win.

In spite of the state’s eye-popping voting statistics, national groups, including the Democratic Party, have shown little interest in placing real resources behind recent efforts to roll back the country’s most impactful voting restriction.

Yet in recent weeks, even without any significant organizational backing, a coalition composed largely of disenfranchised Floridians quietly reached a new landmark in a long and laborious fight to overturn the state’s law. On Monday, after organizers had spent years gathering the requisite 68,314 petition signatures, Florida’s high court announced it had set a March date to consider the proposal to allow a referendum on the 2018 ballot asking voters to roll back the state’s felony voting restriction.

“To the best of my recollection, never before has a purely grassroots effort gotten as far as triggering a supreme court review,” said Desmond Meade, an ex-felon and the chairman of the Floridians for a Fair Democracy, the group leading the effort. “This is a major milestone.”

Meade says that he’s hopeful that the state’s high court will produce a favorable ruling, and he has yet another reason for optimism: even the Florida Division of Elections has reportedly filed a brief supporting the proposed ballot initiative.

Yet even if the court ruling goes Meade’s way, his effort still faces an uphill battle. The court’s approval clears the way for the coalition to move to the final phase of the campaign, which involves collecting some 600,000 additional petition signatures — roughly ten times the amount that it took his group years to secure. To succeed, Meade will somehow have to rapidly and dramatically expand interest in an issue that appears to have been written off by both major political parties, even though it holds the potential to reshape American elections.

“We weren’t getting funding or anything so it took more time,” said Meade. “But we’ll need ten times as many people now.”
