The history of Christianity should be of particular note to African Americans because of its key role in the development of the slave trade. In 1411 A.C.E., Portuguese slave traders presented the first slaves to the Pope, who deemed these Africans to be soulless individuals. Is it a coincidence that the same mentality that created organized crime, the Mafia, also created organized religion and sanctioned the beginning of the slave trade?
The first ship to transport slaves from Africa to America was named "The Jesus" (in photo) Slave masters used religion to control their slaves, promising eternal salvation in exchange for strict adherence to the laws of GOD. Slavery was sanctioned by the church through "Divine Providence" as a means of bringing salvation to a "soulless people."
