California Voters Now Support Obama
According to Taegan Goddard's Political Wire, even though Sen. Barack Obama lost the California primary to Sen. Hillary Clinton by 18 percentage points, he is now favored among Democratic voters, 51% to 38%, according to the latest Field Poll. In a general election match up, Obama beats Sen. John McCain, 52% to 35%. Key finding: "A majority of Democratic voters said they would be more likely to support the Democratic ticket if it included both Obama and Clinton. However, Clinton supporters were more enthusiastic about an Obama-Clinton ticket than Obama backers were about the reverse lineup."
Gallup Daily: Obama Back Up By Double-Digits over Clinton Nationally
According to Gallup, Barack Obama's lead over Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination is back to double-digits, 52% to 42%. Obama (46%) and John McCain (45%) are closely matched in registered voters' election preferences. The Clinton-McCain matchup is similarly tight, 47% to 45%.
The new magic number is 2,118 delegates, and Senator Obama is 66 away
Last night Obama said: “We are getting close to the number that will give us the nomination. And if we’ve hit that number on Tuesday night we will announce that and I think even if we don't, this is the end of the primary season. And I think it's very important for us to pivot and focus on the clear contrast that will exist between Democrats and Republicans in this election. The fact that John McCain and I differ fundamentally on the war in Iraq, we differ on healthcare, we differ on tax policy. And so there is going to be a robust debate about where we need to take the country. That's going to start, I believe, on Tuesday night.”
