The controversial legislation that limits the access of illegal
immigrants to public services has been in court since voters approved
it on Nov. 2. In an emergency motion, the Mexican-American Legal
Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) asked the Ninth U.S. Circuit
Court of Appeals in San Francisco, Calif., on Jan. 4 to block portions
of Prop. 200 while lawyers continue court proceedings Jan. 4. MALDEF
asked for a decision within 21 days. On Dec. 22, a U.S. District Court
Judge in Tucson lifted a restraining order on the ban, declaring it
constitutional and allowing it to become law. [more]
