Patrick J. Buchanan, the columnist and
former presidential candidate, cut short an appearance at Western
Michigan University on Thursday night after a protester doused him with
salad dressing. "Stop the bigotry!" the demonstrator shouted as he
threw the dressing. After he was hit, Mr. Buchanan cut short his
question-and-answer session with the audience, saying, "Thank you all
for coming, but I'm going to have to get my hair washed." The
demonstrator, identified by the authorities only as a 24-year-old
student at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, faces a misdemeanor
charge of disturbing the peace. The incident came two days after
another well-known conservative, William Kristol, was struck by a pie

staff to Vice President Dan Quayle, was splattered by a pie thrown by a
student during a speech on Tuesday about foreign policy at Earlham
