In what is being called a “fast-paced
remake” of their daily newscasts, Black Entertainment Television (BET)
has announced the cancellation of "BET Nightly News." The network says
it is responding to viewer requests for more frequent update on current
events and will replace the half hour nightly newscast with news
updates throughout the day and evening. “Strategically, this new
approach strengthens our news product by responding directly to the
changing needs and preferences of BET viewers,” said Debra Lee,
President and Chief Operating Officer, BET. “This includes placement of
news throughout the day and in primetime, instead of limiting it to the
usual late-night timeslot.” Lee also said the network plans to expand
their news specials and is considering the possibility of a weekend
news magazine or analysis show. In recent years BET has been criticized
for canceling its critically-acclaimed news and public affairs programs
“Lead Story” (hosted by Ed Gordon), “BET Tonight” (hosted by Tavis
Smiley) and “Teen Summit.” Robert L. Johnson, BET Founder and CEO says
this move is not a lessening of the network’s news commitment but
instead is an improvement of their overall news offering. [more]
