Sen. Charles Schumer said yesterday
that he may set up a meeting with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to
discuss a bill to keep the family of police-shooting victim Amadou
Diallo from being deported to Ghana. But he stopped short of saying he
was prepared to change his mind and support a bill that would grant
Diallo's mother, Kadiatou, and other family members permanent-resident
status in the United States. "I have told hundreds of people I don't do
private bills except in life-and-death situations, where if [a person]
goes back, they could get killed — and I've done it for one person,"
Schumer told The Post. "I've had the policy, which is still my policy,
but I'm always willing to talk to someone," he added. Clinton has yet
to take a public position on the issue, but has failed to support the
Diallo bill in the past. [more]
