Critics of Sudan Crisis Target Public Pension Funds

As the blood of thousands seeps into the sands of Sudan, human rights activists in the United States have adopted a new, proven strategy in the fight against genocide: Target the more than $91 billion in public pension funds from U.S. entities doing business with Khartoum. "It is time for us to lay the axe at the root of the problem in the Sudan," says the Rev. Walter Fauntroy, the former Democratic D.C. congressman and a leader in the fight to expose what he calls "the butchers" of the Sudan government. "Our money is being invested through our pension funds, mutual funds, 401(k) plans, and other investment portfolios by financial managers who haven't paid any attention or simply don't care about having invested our money in companies with these scandalous ties."
