Elvira Espinoza is publisher of La Voz, a weekly
Spanish-language newspaper in Phoenix, presumably a city with plenty of
Spanish speakers. But because many young bilingual Hispanics don't
envision themselves as reporters, experts say, they are hard to find
even in Latino-flavored states like Arizona. So Espinoza hires
reporters from Uruguay, Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica. Gannett, which
owns The Arizona Republic, is majority owner of La Voz. Recruiting
Spanish-speaking news media personnel from other countries is not
uncommon. The Valley's other Spanish media outlets - and there are
several newspapers and radio and TV stations - often have folks from
Latin America on their staffs. [more ]
