The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington
filed a request yesterday asking for information from federal
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials about purported sweeps
for illegal immigrants. Unconfirmed reports of widespread dragnets have
swept through the immigrant community in Washington, creating fear and
causing some people to stay home from work and even avoid shopping for
groceries. Immigration spokesman Mike Milne said he knew of only three
major operations in the last eight weeks, all targeting illegal
immigrants with criminal records. He said there could have been
arrests of other criminal aliens that he didn't know about. [more ]
