Republican Anti-affirmative action campaign gets 95% of cash from California group.
Supporters of a 2006 ballot drive to ban affirmative
action in government hiring and college admissions in Michigan say
they're running a grass-roots campaign, but campaign finance reports
filed this month show most of their money is coming from California.
The Michigan Civil Rights Initiative Committee has raised nearly
$140,000, and 95 percent of that was contributed by the
Sacramento-based American Civil Rights Coalition headed by businessman
and former University of California Regent Ward Connerly, the state
records show. That campaign finance report lists no Michigan donors.
But a separate group, Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, raised $2,500
from one state contributor, Rose Sheldon of Bloomfield Hills. Opponents
say the records indicate the movement was foisted on Michigan by
Connerly's group -- despite polls showing the proposal is supported by a
majority of state voters. "It shows this was not an effort that was
driven by a need that Michiganders felt," said Kary Moss, who heads the
American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan. "There is a small group
from outside the state who have brought their agenda to Michigan." [more ] Pictured above: Ward Connerly, Californian and hater of Blacks and Latinos.
