Local Latino activist groups are expecting Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto of a bill this week that would allow
undocumented residents to apply for a driver's license. Schwarzenegger
and State Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, have been at odds for
several months over a re-negotiated version of a bill that was repealed
in 2003 that would have allowed undocumented workers to apply for
driver's licenses. Latino leaders claim that Schwarzenegger has broken his promise. "It
sends a strong message to the Latino community that Arnold
Schwarzenegger is not a man to be trusted," said Evelina Molina. Molina
heads the Napa/Santa Rosa chapter of Hermandad Mexicana
Latinoamericana, an organization that has joined with others to
petition for the right for undocumented residents to apply for driver's
licenses. [more ]
