Although legislation allowing illegal immigrants who
submit to criminal background checks to get California driver's
licenses appears headed for a veto, supporters continued a last-minute
push Thursday with rallies here and at the capital. Several dozen
protesters organized by the Central Labor Council of Alameda County and
the Service Employees International Local 1877 janitors union marched
in circles in front of the Elihu M. Harris State Office Building at
noon. They gave speeches demanding Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger keep the
promise Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, says he made to help pass a
driver's license bill this year. But negotiations are over between the
governor and Cedillo, both sides said Thursday.Although Cedillo still
expects to get the Immigrant Responsibility and Security Act (SB178)
out of the Legislature by Tuesday's deadline, Schwarzenegger says he'll
veto it unless it includes a marker to identify illegal immigrants.
That's out of the question for supporters. [more ]
