Wayne County Sheriff's deputies cited Melvin Butch Hollowell for
solicitation of a prostitute after pulling him over near his home in
Detroit. Sources close to Hollowell claim that he pulled over to help
the woman after he noticed she was in distress, and he picked her up
with the intention of dropping her off at the Detroit police 12th
Precinct station. Hollowell, an attorney working for Detroit's Butzel Long
law firm, ran for secretary of state in 2002, but lost to Republican
Terri Lynn Land. He later landed a position as the Michigan Democratic
Party chair. Hollowell resigned as chair on Aug. 3 and announced that
he had been hired by the John Kerry Campaign as a legal advisor. Also
Hollowell was appointed to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission last
week by the Governor. Hollowell said Thursday he is resigning from both
the commission and the John Kerry Campaign [more ] and [more ]
