California is about to be one step closer to a
proposed ban on the "Redskin" mascot -- if Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg
is has her way. The very vocal civil rights activist, and elected
legislator for California's 45th district, proposed the legislation
back in 2003. That bill would have banned such mascot names as
"Indians", "Apaches", "Braves", and others deemed offensive to Native
American people. The current legislation, which passed the
California Assembly easily months ago, is a much smaller bill,
specifically banning only the "Redskin" mascot. That word,
Goldberg told NAT back in March was the "equivalent to any other racial
epithet." "The bill is on reconsideration in the Senate," Goldberg told
NAT. "We will take it up, probably, [this] Thursday." [more]
