The Arizona Regional Board of Directors of the
Anti-Defamation League
(ADL) has voted overwhelmingly to oppose the passage of Proposition
200. In a joint statement, Helen Stern, ADL Regional Board Chair and
Bill Straus, Arizona Regional Director, stated: ADL policy supports the
humane treatment of all persons regardless of race, ancestry or
national origin. Proposition 200 is poorly worded and does not provide
guidance to public officials regarding its implementation. As a result,
we are concerned about the potential for abuse of Latinos, Spanish
speakers and people of color. We are also concerned about the ?chilling
effect? this initiative may have in discouraging Mexican-American
citizens from seeking and obtaining vital services, and on state and
local employees, such as police and firefighters, from rendering
assistance. [more]
