Commercials hold a lot of weight and power as sellers try to entice
consumers into buying a product. But in the quest to appeal to the
consumer we think McDonald's is going a little too far. If you've seen
the new "Chicken Select" commercials you might know what we mean. One
commercial features a Black woman on a plane with her significant other
eating her chicken selects. Everyone's bending over his or her seats
salivating over her chicken. Her chicken also mesmerizes her
significant other and as he reaches for the box she gets offended. "You
betta don't!" the Black woman shrieks with oh-so-much stereotypical
"Black woman attitude" when she realizes that this man is going to take
her precious chicken. Another commercial features a dark Black woman
with a short natural and pseudo-African garb. She's at home talking to
herself about how she's not going to share her chicken. "I ain't
sharing with you, I ain't even gonna share with your daddy!" she says
swinging her neck. We really think that these commercials are
over the top! There's something out of pocket about watching a Black
person get volatile and ignorant over a box of chicken! Besides the
normal "Black people love their chicken" stereotype these ads are just
offensive. Some of the phrases, namely "You betta don't" aren't
English, heck, they're not even Ebonics! [more]
