The progress African Americans made in the auto industry over the past
few decades is slipping, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, speaking in
Detroit on Thursday, said his civil rights organization will scrutinize
the hiring, buying, lending and management of the car companies in a
report to see if they are "abandoning their diversity initiatives."
Jackson noted that some automakers have had a decline in
African-American car dealers, minorities are often the victims of
predatory lending, and that foreign automakers are lagging behind their
domestic rivals in buying parts from minority suppliers and hiring a
diverse workforce. Rainbow/PUSH's report on the issue, scheduled for
