Activist Quanell X appeared in court Tuesday for his
arraignment on evading arrest charges, News2Houston reported. He did
not enter a plea, but a trial date of Nov. 8 was assigned. The charge
stems from the June 11 incident when police said he refused to pull
over during the surrender of suspected police shooter, Derrick Forney,
24. Quanell X maintained that he thought police were going to
escort him downtown to turn in Forney. Jolanda Jones, Quanell X's
attorney, said he was talking to a Houston Police Department sergeant
on the phone at the same time the police surrounded and stopped his
vehicle. Police claimed Quanell X refused to pull over. Prosecutors
believe Quanell X put himself above the law by refusing to pull over
and calling an assistant police chief to have the officers ordered off
his vehicle. Jones insisted Tuesday that prosecutors refer to her
client by his legal name. [more]
