A citizens' group trying to recall District of Columbia
Mayor Anthony Williams fell short of the required signatures, and their
request for a deadline extension was denied. Tuesday was the final day
to deliver the signatures to the District of Columbia Board of
Elections and Ethics. More than 35,000 valid signatures were required
to get on the Nov. 2 ballot. Barbara Lett Simmons - who returned from
the Democratic convention to lead a news conference - said volunteers
collected fewer than 30,000 signatures. She refused to give a specific
