A state representative might be facing additional
competition in the Aug. 10 runoff after being accused of falsely
claiming that dozens of black legislators endorsed him. The Georgia
Legislative Black Caucus filed a petition Friday seeking to nullify the
July 20 Democratic primary in which state Rep. John Noel advanced to a
runoff. The black caucus asserts that Noel distributed a campaign
leaflet several days before the election with pictures of caucus house
members under the title "Democratic caucus members endorse John Noel."
The leaflet displays head shots of 36 black representatives - all but
three of the House black caucus members. "We think this significantly
impacted the outcome of the race," said state Rep. Pam Stephenson,
D-Atlanta, the lawyer who wrote the petition and a member of the caucus. [more]
