WITH the November election approaching, Republican Florida officials
under Gov. Jeb Bush still are waging efforts seemingly designed to
hinder voting by blacks, a group overwhelmingly Democratic in politics.
In view of the scandal that erupted over Florida's disenfranchisement
of blacks in the infamous 2000 election, you'd think Bush's state
administration would be less obvious this time. The struggle involves
voting rights of former felons. Since America's justice system is
stacked against low-income blacks, sending disproportionate numbers of
them to prison, GOP strategists know that purging ex-felons from voter
registration rolls boosts Republican election chances. [more]
