A Harris County grand jury indicted Houston activist Quanell X today on a charge of evading arrest. Quanell X, 33, formerly Quanell Ralph Evans, was arrested June 11 while driving on Houston's south side with a man suspected of wounding a police officer. The activist said he was bringing Derrick Forney, 24, to police headquarters to surrender, but officers said Quanell refused to pull over until he finally was stopped on Texas 288. Quanell X had notified police that he was bringing Forney in. A judge on June 28 rejected his claim of wrongful arrest, saying police had sufficient reason to arrest him on a felony charge of evading arrest. The offense is punishable by up to two years in a state jail, upon conviction. Quanell X on several previous occasions has arranged the surrender of fugitives. [more]
