The
Rev. Jesse L. Jackson today called for a Constitutional amendment that
would guarantee a quality education for citizens across the country.
Jackson told a NAACP panel convened to examine the U.S. Supreme Court's
Brown vs. Board of Education decision that, while the landmark case
signaled the end of legalized racial segregation, it spawned a new
problem of economic segregation. Citing discrepancies between rich and
poor states and the resulting effect on school districts, he told NAACP
members at a national meeting in Philadelphia that everyone should be
entitled to an "equal, high-quality education. We must treat it as a
constitutional right, not a state commodity." [more]
