A group representing Indian Americans has welcomed the Senate approval
to a legislation to beef up protections against "hate crimes". "Passage
of this legislation is a very important step in supporting diversity,
safety and security of all citizens, said Sanjay Puri, Executive
Director of US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC).Hate crime
attacks against Indian Americans escalated after September 11, 2001,
particularly against Sikhs. Incidences of racial profiling of
Indian-American youth by law enforcement officials have been pervasive,
often due to confusion with Arab-Americans. [more]
