Republican Anti-affirmative action effort aiming for '06

haters take a break: A group that wants to ban affirmative action at
Michigan's public universities and other public agencies won't try to
get its proposal on the November ballot, organizers said Tuesday. The
Michigan Civil Rights Initiative instead is targeting the 2006 election
to float its constitutional amendment.Ward Connerly, who helped lead
similar anti-affirmative action initiatives in California and
Washington, has aided the Michigan campaign. "The court has removed the
last obstacle in our path and the momentum is strong," Connerly said in
a written statement. "We will move forward, full steam ahead." [more]
