Newly elected Rep. Stephanie Herseth is doing
everything possible to convince her state's American Indian voters --
who played a critical role in sending her to Congress -- that she cares
about them. More than anything, the returns from the special election,
in which Herseth narrowly defeated former state Sen. Larry Diedrich
(R), underscore how important the Indian vote is to Herseth. All but
one of the 13 counties with large Indian populations in the state
supported Herseth. Together, Herseth's winning margin in those counties
came to 6,181 votes. For the entire state, Herseth had just a
3,005-vote edge. Herseth and Diedrich are expected to face off again in
November.[more]
