The University  of  Illinois   violated its students'and professors' free-speech rights when it ordered them not to talk to potential student athletes  about the Chief Illiniwek mascot dispute, a federal appeals court panel ruled yesterday.The ruling had no effect on  use of the Chief  Illiniwek  mascot, a  student   dressed as an American Indian chief who dances at sports events. Critics consider it a racist caricature, while supporters  say  it's a   beloved symbol that  honors   American Indians. [more]
