MD. faces deadline on lethal injection lawsuit

The  state responded Thursday to a suit that claims Maryland's method of  execution by lethal injection is tantamount to torture, providing anaffidavit by an anesthesiologist that the current procedure will resultin a "rapid and painless death.'' The suit does not claim convicted  triple murderer Steven Oken, scheduled to die the week of June 14, should not be executed, but says that if he is, it should be done in away that does not inflict unnecessary pain and suffering.
