A World Bank report in July focused on the persistent inequality in South Africa since the end of apartheid.

"At the heart of the inequality lies the inability to create employment opportunities on a large enough scale," said the bank report. The report and plan by Manuel's group goes further and says income disparities, together with national unemployment conservatively estimated at 25 per cent, must be confronted or there will be chaos.

South Africa needs to maintain an economic growth rate of at least 5.5 per cent a year - it's now 2.5 per cent - and to create 11 million jobs in the next 18 years, says the Manuel group.

Kilpatrick loses appeal to review jury records for racial makeup

Kwame Kilpatrick lost an appeal Friday of a judge's order denying him access to jury records in hopes of dismissing the City Hall corruption indictment because there aren't enough blacks in the jury pool. A three-judge panel said Friday that Kilpatrick's appeal is premature but could be reviewed if the former Detroit mayor is convicted and sentenced to prison.

"The District Court's ruling is effectively reviewable on appeal from the final judgment although the remedy for any alleged violation may require the dismissal of the charges against Kilpatrick," the judges wrote Friday.

Cory Booker May Challenge Christie in New Jersey’s 2013 Gubernatorial Race

Newark mayor Cory Booker is reportedly weighing a challenge to New Jersey governor Chris Christie when Christie runs for reelection next year. According to PolitickerNJ, some state Democratic officials see Booker as the only viable candidate to run against Christie in the gubernatorial race. Both New Jersey politicians will be getting a national platform when they speak at their party’s respective conventions over the next two weeks.

Christie will be delivering the keynote address at the Republican National Convention next week, while Booker will be speaking at the Democratic National Convention the following week “to present the party’s platform.” A source in the New Jersey Democratic party tells PolitickerNJ that following Christie’s speech, they want to be able to recruit a counterpoint “who can present more than token opposition” in the upcoming gubernatorial race.

Booker may end up being that counterpoint, because recently he has been meeting with party officials throughout the state with possible plans to run against Christie.

In a video recently unearthed by Jezebel, Megan Lochte made a number of racist remarks in a talk-show appearance after returning from the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

When asked by the host of the Closing Time talk show about her visit to China, Megan immediately went off the deep end with a racist rant. "We were there for a little bit over a week. China was (ethnic slur) out," she started.

It gets worse. "Like it was totally like Chinese. Everything. (ethnic slur). There was only (ethnic slur) everywhere."

The host of the show, Mickey Cucchiella, interrupted and suggested she stop using "that word." But Megan Lochte continued, apparently under the impression she was being funny because of the audience laughter and the host being flabbergasted.

"(Ethnic slur)? But ... but like it fits them because they're like (ethnic slur)."

Megan went on to complain about how "they take pictures of everything" and called the Great Wall a "huge OCD fence." Easily the greatest irony out of everything is that on Megan's Facebook page, she lists her college degree in multicultural marketing.

Tampa Authorities Empty Jail In Anticipation of Mass Arrests at White Party Convention

Thousands of Republicans from around the country will descend upon Tampa, Florida next week for the Republican National Convention, and if recent history is any guide, so too will hundreds of protesters.

To prepare, Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee has ordered the Orient Road Jail, a 1,700 bed prison in Tampa, emptied, relocating some inmates to another nearby prison and releasing others on bond. The entire facility has been transformed into a one-stop booking, detention, and bond-issuance center capable of handling large numbers of arrests, which begs the question: will Tampa police keep demonstrators on a short leash?

Rally Held for Mosque Burned Down by White Terrorists in Joplin, Missouri

A rally for Muslims in Joplin, Missouri, drew hundreds of people on Saturday night, nearly three weeks after a local mosque was destroyed by a fire which members of the Islamic community suspect was a hate crime, the organizer of the event said.

The gathering at a city park was promoted on a Facebook page as a way to show "that love is stronger than fear or hatred." Organizers saw the rally in part as a giving-back to the local Muslim community because their mosque was a relief center for victims of the May 2011 tornado in Joplin, which took 161 lives and damaged or destroyed more than 8,000 buildings.

Rodney King, whose 1991 videotaped beating made him a symbol of police brutality and racial tension in Los Angeles, was in a drug- and alcohol-induced "delirium" when he accidentally drowned in his swimming pool, coroners ruled on Thursday.

The final autopsy report was issued by medical examiners in San Bernardino County two months after King, 47, was found submerged at the deep end of a swimming pool at his home in Rialto, 50 miles east of Los Angeles.

The attorney for the man who fatally shot Trayvon Martin says he is shutting down a Facebook page the defense team was using because it was leading to unhelpful discussions.

Attorney Mark O’Mara announced the decision Wednesday on a separate website set up to distribute information on George Zimmerman’s defense. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting and has pleaded not guilty. He claims he shot the unarmed teenager in self-defense.

O’Mara says the Facebook page served several purposes over the past three months, including giving Zimmerman and the defense team an official social media presence. But O’Mara says it also allowed for discussions of evidence and Zimmerman’s guilt or innocence.

Florida has dominated voting rights news for its attempts to restrict registration and early voting, for its questionable voter purge, for the local elections officials who've opposed such measures, and for the flurry of lawsuits that have followed.

But what most of us haven't heard about is the issue of absentee voter fraud that, while not widespread, has occurred in parts of Florida for the past 20 years. While voter fraud in general remains nearly nonexistent, two cities with high Cuban-American populations in Florida have seen incidents where absentee ballots have been illegally brokered. Florida's changes to its electoral system, meanwhile, haven't addressed the ballot brokering, but have created changes that make it harder for other people of color to vote.
